How to calculate your WhatsApp API bill

  1. 1Service replies: conversations × replies per conversation. Subtract 1,000 free per number, then multiply the rest by the market's utility rate.
  2. 2Utility templates: every one is billed, inside or outside the window, at the utility rate. Volume discounts start after 100,000 a month.
  3. 3Marketing templates: every one is billed at the marketing rate, with no allowance and no volume discount.
  4. 4The total is your monthly Meta bill. Your provider adds its own fees, if any.

What the calculator leaves out

  • Your provider's fees and any taxes.
  • Free entry point windows from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, where everything except Meta Business Agent replies is free.
  • Authentication templates and authentication-international rates.
  • Meta Business Agent replies, billed per token at roughly 4 to 5 US cents each.

Service vs utility vs marketing: the difference

The category sets the price. Here's how they differ, priced at Saudi Arabia's rates.

Service vs utility vs marketing: the difference
CategoryFree allowanceSaudi rate
Service replyFree-form reply inside the 24-hour windowFirst 1,000 per number per month$0.0107
Utility templateOrder, shipping, invoice, appointment reminderNone$0.0107

Authentication templateOne-time passcodeNone$0.0107

The 24-hour window opens when a customer messages or calls you and resets with each new message from them. Outside it you can only send templates.

A free-form reply inside the window is a service message even if it promotes something, so Meta never adds a marketing charge to it.

WhatsApp cost calculator FAQ

How do I calculate WhatsApp API costs for my business?

Multiply the messages in each category by that category's rate in your customer's market. Service replies only cost money after the first 1,000 per number per month. The calculator above does it for you.

Is every chat bubble billed separately?

Yes. Each delivered message is billed on its own, so an answer split into three bubbles is three messages.

Does the calculator include my provider's fees?

No. It shows Meta's charges only. Ask your provider about its monthly or per-message fees.

What is the difference between a utility and a marketing template?

A utility template is about something the customer did: an order, a booking, an invoice. A marketing template promotes something they didn't ask for. Marketing costs more everywhere, and neither has a free allowance.

When does the 24-hour window start?

When the customer messages or calls you, and it resets to a full 24 hours with each new message from them. Inside it you can send free-form replies; outside it, templates only.
